NEW YORK, NY - November 1, 2007 - Orthopedic oncologist James C. Wittig, MD has been named Chief of Orthopedic Oncology (Pediatric & Adult) at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Wittig will maintain an active subspecialty clinical practice that focuses on treating pediatric and adult patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas (cancers) as well as benign bone and soft tissue tumors and metastatic cancers. Wittig also has a particular subspecialty interest and extensive experience in limb sparing surgery for shoulder girdle tumors, cryosurgery, radiofrequency ablation and minimally invasive biopsies. Wittig's continuous research, renowned expertise, knowledge and experience utilizing the most advanced technologies, treatment protocols and his consistent collaboration with members of the orthopedic oncology team will move Mount Sinai Medical Center into the forefront of orthopedic oncology services.

A resident of New York City, Wittig began his practice in Orthopedic Oncology at NYU Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. Over the course of the following years, Wittig established the first orthopedic oncology clinic for indigent care in New York City at Bellevue Hospital Center, the Sarcoma Service at NYU/Tisch Hospital and also served as Director of the Sarcoma Division of the NYU Cancer Institute. Wittig's extensive training in the field of orthopedic oncology included a two-year fellowship at the Washington Cancer Institute where he served as Sarcoma Consultant to the Surgical and Pediatric Oncology Branches of the National Cancer Institute. Wittig began his medical training at New York University School of Medicine and performed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where he later served as Chief Resident and was recognized for his excellence in orthopedic surgery.

Wittig is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Inc., Specialty Fellow - American Pediatric Association, as well as the Medical Society of New Jersey. He is also a published expert and lecturer in the field of Orthopedic Surgery throughout the nation.
