Pediatric Tumors: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Family Support

Pediatric tumor diagnosis and treatment require early recognition, timely referral, and comprehensive care. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, although cancers in childhood are rare, physicians should maintain a high index of suspicion—especially when an abnormal mass is detected.

Most pediatric tumors grow slowly, and prompt imaging combined with early referral to a specialized oncology center can significantly improve survival. However, certain tumors may grow rapidly or form near vital organs, such as the spinal cord or airway. These represent medical emergencies requiring urgent intervention and immediate referral to the emergency department.

Treatment for pediatric tumors may involve surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, depending on the tumor type. While these treatments provide meaningful survival benefits, they can also cause long-term side effects, requiring ongoing monitoring and specialized survivorship care. Today, long-term childhood cancer survivors represent a growing population with unique medical and psychosocial needs.

Earlier this year, Dr. Wittig established the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of New Jersey (PCFNJ), at a time when pediatric cancer remains a pressing global challenge. More than 400,000 children under age 20 are diagnosed worldwide each year, with approximately 240 new cases annually in New Jersey alone.

The foundation provides comprehensive support by integrating family assistance, holistic wellness, creative engagement, and research funding. PCFNJ’s mission is to bring hope, strength, and healing to children and families affected by pediatric cancer.

By addressing both immediate family needs and advancing long-term medical progress, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation of New Jersey reflects Dr. Wittig’s lifelong mission of healing. The foundation is poised to transform the way pediatric cancer is supported—not only in New Jersey, but across the United States and beyond.
